How a Hackathon can help bust business
bureaucracy
What if the best ideas from your business were actually sitting with someone who had no decision-
making ability? What if the person who answered your phones had an idea that could save your
business money or improve productivity?
Many organisations are missing great opportunities without even knowing it and Twiga Group can
help uncover those.
Australian businesses can help create better work experiences for their staff by ‘hacking the culture’
of an organisation. Twiga Group is helping create efficiencies and higher performing teams through
Hackathons that draw on untapped internal knowledge.
Managing Director of Twiga Group Jo Smyth said some of the best ideas for businesses could come
from staff whose voice is often ‘unheard’ when operational strategies are developed. It can lead to
sticking points that slow processes – and ultimately cost businesses money.
“We know that staff – especially those on the frontline – experience issues that can disrupt business.
They often see more efficient ways of doing things, but their ideas can go unheard.
“We have a great success story of working with an energy company that wanted to ‘bust the
bureaucracy’ and create a better work experience for their people. We created a Hackathon using
design-thinking techniques to help teams solve internal cultural issues.”
Ms Smyth said Twiga Group’s design-thinking techniques include the ability for staff to submit an
idea, be part of a voting process and form teams to help solve issues. Ideas are judged by an expert
panel and winning ideas able to be executed with post-event coaching support from Twiga Group.
“By creating a day of innovation, we are able to help solve problems to create pathways for the
company’s productivity to improve and have people be much happier in their roles,” Ms Smyth said.
Ms Smyth said it’s another example of businesses needing to think beyond just the bottom line in
their operational strategies.
Twiga Group uses human-centred design techniques to explore culture, accelerate change and solve
complex problems while exploring team dynamics.
